These are my first ever Torah Portion notes from 2018 and 2019, drawn from these sources. Every Saturday starting from Friday sunset, God's people get together and read portions from the Torah to learn and look deeper into His word, starting after the 8 days Feast of tabernacles until.Tabernacles the next year:

TORAH
In this Torah Portion, there is a liturgy. We think of liturgies as something dirty and Catholic. However, it is defined as a coping mechanism from traumatic experienced and helps us connected with it writer - YHWH. The kohen's presence with the first-fruits offering, in itself is making a declaration. The declaration is that YHWH keeps His promises - the promises made to the forefathers are realised in the simple farmer. The farmer the goes on to give a potted history that shows he has an understanding of the significance of what is taking place.
A Syrian was my father — That is, Jacob; for though born in Canaan, he was a Syrian by descent, his mother Rebecca, and his grandfather Abraham, being both of Chaldea or Mesopotamia, which in Scripture is comprehended under the name of Syria. His wives and children, by their mothers’ side, and his relations, were Syrians, and he himself had lived twenty years in Syria with Laban. Ready to perish — Through want and poverty, or through the rage of his brother Esau, and the treachery of his father-in-law Laban.
"Deuteronomy 26:11 King James Version (KJV)
11 And thou shalt rejoice in every good thing which the Lord thy God hath given unto thee, and unto thine house, thou, and the Levite, and the stranger that is among you. " We rejoice when giving tithes or receiving tithes. We need to rejoice when YHWH provides something. When everyone gave me money for my 18, i had like 2000 dollars in total. I thank the Lord to the point of tears.
What does it mean to "rejoice" (samach)? The word "rejoice" (samach) appears again as a command when we come across the construction of the altar on Mt. Ebal.
"Deuteronomy 28:47-48 King James Version (KJV)
47 Because thou servedst not the Lord thy God with joyfulness (samach), and with gladness of heart, for the abundance of all things;
48 Therefore shalt thou serve thine enemies which the Lord shall send against thee, in hunger, and in thirst, and in nakedness, and in want of all things: and he shall put a yoke of iron upon thy neck, until he have destroyed thee."
Consider carefully what these verses are NOT saying. They are not saying that the curses will not come upon the Israelites for not serving Him or even for NOT keeping the commandments. Rather they will come upon Israel for NOT serving Him with joy (samach) and gladness of heart!
"John 15:10-11 King James Version (KJV)
10 If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love.
11 These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full."
A terrific titan - the sublime and the Lord's. Capacious, awful, imposing blue beast yet, placid and still. |
With Life comes the opportunity for growth. In fact, we can connect joy and growth through the Hebrew as they are similar and related in meaning:
Joy - (sameach)
Growth - (tzameach)
Now we have a whole new way of looking at joy! We can be joyful because we know that we are experiencing growth!
However, i can admit, especially this year, i would always feel worn out, a bit stressed and tried from all the work i am required to do.
"Philippians 4:4-9 King James Version (KJV)
4 Rejoice in the Lord always: and again I say, Rejoice.
5 Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand.
6 Do not be anxious; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.
7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.
9 Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you.
In doing this liturgy, the Israelites declare that he is not ungrateful. He is recognising not only where he has come from, but also the Almighty who has consistently guided him. Despite all odds, because of the Almighty's kindness and graciousness, the Israelites were able to come in and possess the Land. And as a conclusion to this process, they are commanded to "rejoice". We are to focus on acknowledging YHWH's ownership of nature and the Garden, and that we possess it because He has chosen us as His stewards. We are to recognise the Almighty and all His endeavours.
"Deuteronomy 8:18 King James Version (KJV)
18 But thou shalt remember the Lord thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day."
As we make up the foundations of the stone wall, it fulfils what Abraham was looking forward too.
"Hebrews 11:8-16 King James Version (KJV)
8 By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.
9 By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise:
10 For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.
11 Through faith also Sara herself received strength to conceive seed, and was delivered of a child when she was past age, because she judged him faithful who had promised.
12 Therefore sprang there even of one, and him as good as dead, so many as the stars of the sky in multitude, and as the sand which is by the sea shore innumerable.
13 These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.
14 For they that say such things declare plainly that they seek a country.
15 And truly, if they had been mindful of that country from whence they came out, they might have had opportunity to have returned.
16 But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city."
The Hebrew in Deuteronomy 26:13, concludes with "i have not forgotten". The "them" was added. This is very interesting because we can connect this with something we studied a few weeks ago:
"Deuteronomy 8:10 King James Version (KJV)
10 When thou hast eaten and art full, then thou shalt bless the Lord thy God for the good land which he hath given thee."
This is the verse from which we get the commandments to bless YHWH after a meal. Note the next verse:
"Deuteronomy 8:11 King James Version (KJV)
11 Beware that thou forget not the Lord thy God, in not keeping his commandments, and his judgments, and his statutes, which I command thee this day:"
Did you ever wonder why the commandments to bless YHWH after the meal included blessing Him "for the good land"? The inheritance of the land ties back to the Abrahamic covenant. YHWH's plan is to give the Promise Land to His chosen people Israel, a place where they can keep His Torah and therefore be a light to the whole world. But our tendency to forget seems to be an occupational hazard of receiving His blessings.
The Hebrew word for stone is eben or Even, it is an aleph (strong leader), bet (house) noon means life. It would mean the son (ben) of life. Stone and son are connected phonetically. Interestingly, if you drop the noon, you get the word for Father - Abba. Now lets read the text with the word son instead.

27 Moses and the elders of Israel commanded the people, saying, “Keep all the commandment which I command you today. 2 It shall be on the day when you shall pass over the Jordan to the land which Yahweh your God gives you, that you shall set yourself up great sons, and coat them with plaster (lime or whitewashed clean - the fine linen).
What would be done here is that the Israelites would take the entire Torah and go around the altar and inscribe the whole Torah in the limestone. That puts a whole new meaning on what it means in the New Covenant when He writes the Torah in our hearts in the future.
"Jeremiah 31:31-33 King James Version (KJV)
31 Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah:
32 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the Lord:
33 But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the Lord, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people."
"Ezekiel 36:24-26 King James Version (KJV)
24 For I will take you from among the heathen, and gather you out of all countries, and will bring you into your own land.
25 Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean: from all your filthiness, and from all your idols, will I cleanse you.
26 A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh."

The little stones hold up the large stones in an ancient Israelite altar. Here, these stones represent us (1 Peter 2:5) and the body of Messiah. If therefore, the large stones represent leaders and pastors, then they would be fall without the support of the little stones - the Natsarim that are not leaders. So if you feel little and insignificant in the body, rejoice! You are probably the mots important stone that holds up a major part of the wall in your area. You may feel alone, but you are important. Every single one of us is important for the foundation. When we have no limestone - white garments - with the words of the spirit covering us, we are venerable to the enemy who can take the smallest and weakest stone, pull it out and the larger stones collapse. This is how the enemy gets into a congregations. It creates a giant hole in the wall. God is building up the walls of Israel!
Did you know if you are reading this following YHWH's commandments you are fulfilling ancient prophecies? We are spoken about in the Bible! It is part of His glorious plan! If that isnot the reason to celebrate and rejoice i do not know what its.
It is not down to us what fruits we reap - it is His blessing which comes when we follow Him. If we stray we repent.
"Deuteronomy 27 World English Bible (WEB)
27 Moses and the elders of Israel commanded the people, saying, “Keep all the commandment which I command you today. 2 It shall be on the day when you shall pass over the Jordan to the land which Yahweh your God gives you, that you shall set yourself up great stones, and coat them with plaster (lime). 3 You shall write on them all the words of this law, when you have passed over, that you may go in to the land which Yahweh your God gives you, a land flowing with milk and honey, as Yahweh, the God of your fathers, has promised you. 4 It shall be, when you have crossed over the Jordan, that you shall set up these stones, which I command you today, on Mount Ebal, and you shall coat them with plaster. 5 There you shall build an altar to Yahweh your God, an altar of stones. You shall not use any iron tool on them. 6 You shall build Yahweh your God’s altar of uncut stones. You shall offer burnt offerings on it to Yahweh your God. 7 You shall sacrifice peace offerings, and shall eat there. You shall rejoice before Yahweh your God. 8 You shall write on the stones all the words of this law very plainly.”
We are described as living stones in the Scriptures - 1 Peter 2:5 - which is interesting because all us humans have slight differences and are very deserve. This is why we are stones because we are different as the stones placed on the altars are different. Canaanites had stones that are identical, tells us Satan loves cloning people (which is happening right now.) If you see a church and everyone looks the same, the same race, the same clothes or similar clothes, they are not from God. Because God is accepting to all that desire to be accepted. It will be extremely diverse congregation if a church is lead by the Spirit. We need to worship God in a living stone way, The second you allow man to take his hammers and chisels and starting beating on you, eroding you to what they what you to become, then you have stop following the Creator and have become religious. Our own world is a Roman and I daresay: a Spartan society. More and more, people are afraid of radical new ideas, as the Spartans were. They are more and more engaged in manipulating the human gene pool to make us better: as the Spartans and the Nazis did. And if you attempt to go against this tradition by questioning the cultural consciousness and rocking the boat, you will be censored, deprived of your career, imprisoned, or even killed: as the Romans and Spartans were. They justify it by calling us terrorist or extremists, or ignorant. Fear is the tool of manipulation: just as the Romans and the Spartans used. This is why God tells us to not be friends with the world and what they stand for. It is flawed and cannot stop changing.
Strikingly, if you actually read the Hebrew Bible without using eisegesis, it condemns both religion (Matthew 15:9, Colossians 2:22, 1 Timothy 4:1, Matthew 15:3, Mark 7:13, Colossians 2:8, 2 Thessalonians 2:15, 2 Thessalonians 3:6, 1 Peter 1:18 and Titus 1:14) and pseudo science like Darwinism, panspermia and astronomy/cosmology, (The entire book of Genesis, Job 9, Mark 13:25, Revelation 6:14, Isaiah 34:4, Job 22:14, Revelation 20:9, Job 26, Job 37:18, 2 Samuel 22:8, Isaiah 40:22, Ezekiel 1:26, Amos 9:6, 1 Chronicles 16:30, Proverbs 8 ect.)
Therefore religion is not following what God says to do, but following what man says about God - which ultimately leads to being against God. Thus, If you believe that believing the Bible literally makes you religious: that is absurd! The Bible would be condemning itself! You are not religious if you take the Bible for what it says! Jesus was anti-religion but not anti-Jewish like Christendom try to say (Matthew 23.)
There is a narrow path in between mainstream agenda-driven science and hypocritical vulgar religion. That is loving God and your fellow human (The Torah - the Way, the Truth and the Life.) Religion now is corrupt, judgemental and unfulfilling. The truth is righteous, full of mercy and a blessing.
There is an anaphora on the phrase "this day". We are to hearken unto His words not tomorrow, not when we finished school, not when we are ready, but NOW. Now or never. If we are not willing to think differently and act differently from those around us, we are snubbing our Elohim, Our Saviour, and telling Him that His gift to us is not something we care for.
These verses at Shechem are thematically connected to the initial giving of the Torah back in Exodus 19-24!
There is a strong link between the covenant being ratified at Sinai and the covenant at Moab.
In summary, the thematic connections between Devarim 27:1-10 and Exodus 19-24 are
given to show us that Adonai is officially entering into covenant with this new generation
of Israelites, just as He entered into covenant with the original nation of Israel back in
Exodus! What’s most important, though, is that the covenant He makes with Am Yisrael
in Devarim 27 is the same covenant originally given at Mount Sinai, even though most in
this generation were not originally present at the initial giving of the Torah! You see, the
covenant at Mount Sinai is for all Israelites born at any time! We’ll see how this is
explicitly taught in next week’s lesson.
Why is God here, calling that His people are made His people at the Jordan went throughout the whole Torah, His refers to His people as His people as His people. Firstly, this new generation, unlike the first, dropped the dead weight (the past) and built and put up the stones. It was their faith that earned them the title to be called - "you are my people." People that exceed exceptions and break the bland traditions of men. People that are willing to get their hands dirty and get their legs wet. People that can face 20 to 35 foot giants with nothing but a stone and feel confident.
So, half of the tribes go on one mountain and the other of the the second. The Tribes that go on Mt. Gerizrim are: Simenon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Benjamin, Ephraim and Manasseh - proclaims the blessings. The Tribes on Mount Ebal are the Northern House of Israel that will be divorced and redeemed by Messiah. Reuben, Gad, Asher, Zebulun, Dan,and Nephtali. YHWH as the pillar of cloud would be in the middle. What this picture illustrated for us here relates to the table of show-bread. At the opposite of the table of show-bread at the centre is the menorah on the opposite side of the room shining and illuminating. The word of God is shining its self on the bread - the two mountains. We are to eat from the bread of the word everyday and by following it we need to chose if we will be blessed or cursed. We are to eat from the mountain on the right, which may have been the place of the tree of life.
The curse on mount Gerizim could be the place where the original tree of knowledge of good and evil is. and the blessing on Mt Ebal is of course, the tree of life.
Shechem could be the place where the two trees are. See this video at 1:28:54
3 You shall write on them all the words of this law, when you have passed over, that you may go in to the land which Yahweh your God gives you, a land flowing with milk and honey, as Yahweh, the God of your fathers, has promised you.
The curse on mount Gerizim could be the place where the original tree of knowledge of good and evil is. and the blessing on Mt Ebal is of course, the tree of life.
Chapter 28 goes into lengthy about how these curses will manifest themselves (verse 15-68) and its is not pleasant. It personally was not a good read reading through them all. The curses come as a result for not serving YHWH will joy and gladness in heart. We are commanded to have fun and party. But not how the worlds parties. We party to worship Him. We can does this every Feats of Tabernacles. We cannot fail to be grateful, and be selfish. I am only passing school because of Him. If you refuse to rejoice at what you have, you become jealous, you covet, and you steal other people's things and become selfish.
Should have shared your abundance and been more grateful old sport. It an't about you. |
Be the farmer who can look his good fortune in the eye and say thank you from the bottom of his heart and can share what he has. It's a recipe for how happiness can be persevered. Thank YHWH and share your bounty with those less fortune.
Rejoice and share - it is the key to happiness. Give tithes and offerings with gladness and give them whole heatedly, not half heatedly and sly with tendencies towards the sneaky, towards secret sins. If your mantra is it is all mine - you will end up miserable.
So do not rob from YHWH! It is cool to serve YHWH with gladness in heart.
"1 Thessalonians 5:16-19 King James Version (KJV)
16 Rejoice evermore.
17 Pray without ceasing.
18 In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.
19 Quench not the Spirit."
Come to the party and acknowledge that:
"James 1:17 King James Version (KJV)
17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning."
"Deuteronomy 28 World English Bible (WEB)
28 It shall happen, if you shall listen diligently to Yahweh your God’s voice, to observe to do all his commandments which I command you today, that Yahweh your God will set you high above all the nations of the earth. 2 All these blessings will come upon you, and overtake you, if you listen to Yahweh your God’s voice."
What does God mean when He says, His love will overtake you? God is saying that if we continue to move on, if we continue to move in His word and in the direction He called you to follow, we need to stop murmuring and find YHWH. When that happens, his waves of blessings will overtake you like the enemy does. The Hebrew (nasag) pictograph for this word overtake is a mem (sperm, life), shin (consuming teeth, fire) and gimel (generous rich man, camel). Overtaking is the life that consumes you and gives generously. It is the internal seed of the Almighty God that is a consuming fire and gives every bless you need. This is like the fire of God coming down and resting on our heads like in Acts 2. The answer is to run into the fire. People are afraid of the true faith.
Here is a chiastic structure outlined in this Torah Portion. It all blessings points to spiritual and military victory:
- Economic success (v 3a)
- Fertility of soil (v 3b)
- Fertility of humans and animals (v 4)
- Abundant food (v 5)
- Military victory (spiritual and physical) (v 6)
- Military victory (spiritual and physical) (v 7)
- Abundant food (v 8)
- Fertility of humans and animals (v 11)
- Fertility of soil (v 12a)
- Economic success (v 12b-13)
And all curses lead to oppression:
- Famine and droughts (v 23-24)
- Defeat leads to becoming a byword (v 25 - 26)
- Inflammation (v 27)
- Madness and mental illness (v 28 - 29a)
- Constant abuse by others. Bad luck. (v 29b)
- Oppression (v 30 - 33a)
- Constant abuse by others. Bad luck. (v 33b)
- Madness from what one sees (v 34)
- Inflammation (v 35)
- Exile leads to becoming a byword (v 36 - 37)
- Agriculture disaster (crop destroying pests) (v 38 - 42)
So, you want victory?
"Psalm 100:4 King James Version (KJV)
4 Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name."
The reference to Deuteronomy 28:23 may be metaphorically referring to being trapped in the Greco-Roman mindset. We know the firmament of Heaven is not brass but sapphire so it could be referring to Daniel 2- brass is Greece and Iron is Rome.
"Deuteronomy 28:63 World English Bible (WEB)
63 It will happen that as Yahweh rejoiced over you to do you good, and to multiply you, so Yahweh will rejoice over you to cause you to perish and to destroy you. You will be plucked from the land that you are going in to possess."
Woah! A lot of people do say YHWH is a loving God, and that is true. However, they miss completely His other side. It is His other side, when we openly rebel against Him when we know the truth it has natural ramifications that are very bad. It is because rebellion is witchcraft. Our justice is not His justice. We cannot reach the point of no return. This exactly what happened to Dudimose in the Exodus.
Look at the culture of America and Australia in the political system, if only we would obey YHWH. It seems to be all about our rights, my rights! Guess what? This is in Revelation. The church of Laodicea means the rights of the people in Greek. It is the lukewarm church!!
"14 “To the angel of the assembly in Laodicea write:
“The Amen, the Faithful and True Witness, the Beginning of God’s creation, says these things:
15 “I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were cold or hot. 16 So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will vomit you out of my mouth. 17 Because you say, ‘I am rich, and have gotten riches, and have need of nothing;’ and don’t know that you are the wretched one, miserable, poor, blind, and naked; 18 I counsel you to buy from me gold refined by fire, that you may become rich; and white garments, that you may clothe yourself, and that the shame of your nakedness may not be revealed; and eye salve to anoint your eyes, that you may see. 19 As many as I love, I reprove and chasten. Be zealous therefore, and repent. 20 Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, then I will come in to him, and will dine with him, and he with me. 21 He who overcomes, I will give to him to sit down with me on my throne, as I also overcame, and sat down with my Father on his throne. 22 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the assemblies.” Revelation 3
When YHWH makes a covenant, it adds to the old one that came before.
PROPHETS AND NEW TESTAMENT
Isaiah reiterates that we are to be joyful even in the midst of storms in life.
"Isaiah 60:1-3 World English Bible (WEB)60 “Arise, shine; for your light has come,
and Yahweh’s glory has risen on you.
2 For, behold, darkness will cover the earth,
and thick darkness the peoples;
but Yahweh will arise on you,
and his glory shall be seen on you.
3 Nations will come to your light,
and kings to the brightness of your rising."
When we do what YHWH says, out actions alone, are enough to witness to others. Even jut doing the commandments like wearing tassels, eating kosher and keeping the feasts.
"Matthew 13:12 World English Bible (WEB)
12 For whoever has, to him will be given, and he will have abundance; but whoever doesn’t have, from him will be taken away even that which he has."
In this context, Yeshua is talking about the Kingdom of God. The words have the ring of a proverb applicable, in its literal meaning, to the conditions of worldly prosperity. There fortune smiles on the fortunate, and nothing succeeds like success. Something like that law, our Lord tells His disciples, is to be found in the conditions of spiritual growth in wisdom. They had some elements of that wisdom, and therefore, using their knowledge rightly, could pass on to more. The people, including even scribes and Pharisees, were as those that had few or none, and not using even the little that they had, were in danger of losing even that. The faithless Jew was sinking down to the level of a superstitious heathen. The proverb accordingly teaches the same lesson as that which we afterwards find developed in the parables of the Talents and the Pounds.
We do not want to be the unprofitable servant that never gave to anyone, because he was selfish and miserable. Let us be the good and faithful servant and the wise virgins that serve God with joy and whole heartiness and give to those in need. Let us be the sheep and not the goats. Because now the age of grace is over and judgement is coming.
The giving of the widow in Luke 21 is given with her enter heart. It was everything she had to give. This is the heart we should have went we give to others and tithe.
When Yeshua says to the weeping women to not weep for Him, He encourages us to rejoice because Yeshua has overcome the world, He has had victory. We must gain this through faith and serving YHWH and our neighbour with joy.
The passing through the Jordan is like being birthed from the birth canal (born again) by faith. Because of this, 300 men can defeat 1000s. This generation were once observers to YHWH opening stuff, now they are going be used to do things great for YHWH. They get to be part of it. You cannot be part of His Kingdom work if you do not have faith. Those that try to walk in His truth will be washed in the waters of the Jordan and the pass will be left behind and the holy spirit will breath into the body and new leadership will built on the old and a new limestone will be written on their hearts to protect the body from the wolves. He is building His church to prepare His bride to be mature. That is by going through the Tribulation. No complaining.
"2 My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations;" James 1:2
When we endure temptation like Job, we gain the crown of life.
"James 1:12-15 World English Bible (WEB)
12 Blessed is a person who endures temptation, for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life, which the Lord promised to those who love him.
13 Let no man say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God,” for God can’t be tempted by evil, and he himself tempts no one. 14 But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own lust and enticed. 15 Then the lust, when it has conceived, bears sin. The sin, when it is full grown, produces death."
This is the truth, not religion.
"James 1:27 World English Bible (WEB)
27 Pure religion and undefiled before our God and Father is this: to visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained by the world."
Lets end with a video that humbled me to realise that we should be grateful and not be miserable.
Shalom
